We have been lucky enough over the years to train some well above average horses. Identifying which are your better animals and then knowing how to campaign them successfully is part of the skill and enjoyment of the job. Those inmates, especially fillies with paddock potential, who deserved a shot at black type, have been steered in that direction with some pleasing outcomes. We have also had our fair share of really good, solid, consistent handicappers and one particularly memorable hurdler
FOUR-LEGGED FRIEND flew the flag for us in our first year. A little scatty but lightning fast, she lowered the colours of unbeaten Superpower in a Listed contest at Newmarket's July Meeting in 1988.
On the same day ALDBOURNE picked up a second place in the Group 3 Cherry Hinton Stakes.
BILLIE BLUE was of the same era. She was delicate and raced only once, coming second as a 3 year old but she went on to produce a hatful of winners including the group winner Tumbleweed Ridge and is granddam to Queen Mary winner Gilded and Railway Stakes winner Formosina.
SIGN PEOPLE was a contemporary of the above fillies. He won at 2 at the Goodwood Festival and went on to gain black type that same year.
PRINCESS TAUFAN kept up the good work as a juvenile, taking the Listed National Stakes at Sandown and a 3rd place in York's Lowther Stakes.
And then of course we had the great OUR RITA who progressed from humble beginnings to glory in the Lincoln Handicap of 1994, improving her pedigree with 2 Listed places the same year. She took up a stud career in Australia where she too produced some black type progeny.
Along with these high class performers we have plied our trade with a lot of reliable handicappers who haven't let us down when we needed them. Through the years the likes of MERSEYSIDE MAN, KING AL, HERR TRIGGER, PIPS SONG (contested the Wokingham at Royal Ascot and Newmarket's Bunbury Cup), DREAMS END (placed 3rd in the Ebor at York), SNOWY RIVER, BOBBY CHARLES and BIG NOISE (placed in the Victoria Cup at Ascot) have advertised our skills on the flat and the wonderfully predictable JAWANI chalked up 6 hurdle wins for us under the National Hunt code.
At times we have also managed to merge our training abilities with our interest and practical knowledge of breeding, PEARLY RIVER and RED SAIL both ran and won whilst in foal and JUNKET was but a whisker away from achieving a win once in foal to Equiano.
FANOOS has gone into the folklore of 2014. Bought out of training in December 2013 she was prepared for the Fillies' and Mares' race at the inaugural All-Weather Championships. A beautiful horse with a ton of ability and a number of quirks, she won twice and was placed 2nd whilst in our care. And she made it to the Championships, coming in the prize money despite a far from ideal passage through the race.
